CE marking

The mandatory conformity marking for the EU market. The manufacturer affixes it after completing conformity assessment against the applicable directives and regulations, declaring that the product meets health, safety and environmental requirements. Some product categories require a notified body.

Issued by
Manufacturer's self-declaration; a notified body issues the certificate where required
Assessment route
Self-declaration
How it is obtained
Identify the applicable directives and regulations (battery regulation, EMC, Low Voltage, radio equipment and so on), complete the corresponding testing, compile the technical file and sign the EU Declaration of Conformity. Non-EU manufacturers must appoint an EU authorised representative.
Marking rules
The marking is normally at least 5 mm high and its letter proportions must not be altered when scaled. Where a notified body is involved, its four-digit number follows the marking. It must not be affixed to products that have not completed conformity assessment.
Validity and upkeep
No fixed expiry. Re-assessment is needed when the design, the applicable regulation edition or the technical file changes.
