BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)
India's market-access scheme for products in the compulsory registration scope. Testing must be completed at a BIS-recognised Indian laboratory — overseas reports are generally not accepted. Once registered, the standard mark and registration number (R-number) may be applied.
- Issued by
- Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
- Assessment route
- Compulsory registration
- How it is obtained
- Confirm whether the product is in scope and which IS edition applies; test at a BIS-recognised laboratory; submit factory details and proof of the manufacturing address; appoint an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR).
- Marking rules
- The standard mark must appear together with the registration number, in the format and position specified by BIS. Unregistered models may not use it.
- Validity and upkeep
- Registration is typically valid for two years and renewable; scope and standard revisions trigger review.
