VDE-AR-N 4105:2026: what Germany’s new low-voltage grid code means for inverter, storage and charger makers

Germany’s connection rule for generators and storage on the low-voltage grid has been revised for the first time since 2018. It brings new business — zero feed-in, commercial systems up to 500 kW, bidirectional charging — and a certificate deadline that every supplier to the German market has to plan for.

  • 01VDE-AR-N 4105:2026-03 was published on 26 February 2026 and replaces the 2018 edition; the old edition may still be applied for 12 months.
  • 02Certificates under the 2018 edition remain sufficient until 12 months after the revised test standard DIN VDE V 0124-100 takes effect — at the latest 24 months after the new rule (around early 2028).
  • 03Q(U) becomes the preset reactive-power mode, cos φ 0.9 applies to all inverter units, and frequency and RoCoF ride-through requirements are tightened.
  • 04Feed-in limitation becomes a certified “PAV,E protection” that may sit inside the inverter, storage system or bidirectional charger — down to zero feed-in.
  • 05Bidirectional EV chargers count as storage while a V2G-capable vehicle is connected and need unit and NA-protection certificates registered in ZEREZ.

What has changed — and when

VDE-AR-N 4105 sets the technical rules for connecting and operating generating plants and storage on Germany’s low-voltage grid. The new edition, VDE-AR-N 4105:2026-03, was published on 26 February 2026 (VDE Verlag; DKE lists 1 March 2026, and grid operators count the transition from 27 February). It follows a public consultation of the 2024 draft that drew 810 comments.

The rule carries more weight than before: following Bundesnetzagentur decision BK6-23-037 it is a binding technical safety rule under § 49(2) EnWG, not just a recommendation.

Two transition periods run in parallel:

WhatUntil
Planning and connecting under the 2018 edition12 months after publication (around March 2027)
Unit certificates under the 2018 edition12 months after the revised DIN VDE V 0124-100 takes effect, at the latest 24 months after the new rule (around early 2028)

Plants commissioned with 2018 certificates during the transition do not need to be re-certified later.

The changes that matter for manufacturers

TopicVDE-AR-N 4105:2026
ScopeLow-voltage connections, and now also plants with ΣPAmax 135–500 kW and agreed feed-in ≤ 270 kW even when connected at a higher voltage level; a plant certificate only above these limits
Reactive powerQ(U) is the preset parameter set; cos φ = 0.9 for all inverter-only units (the split at 4.6 kVA is gone); storage keeps the control mode while charging
Feed-in limitPAV,E monitoring becomes a certified PAV,E protection, adjustable from 0 to 100 % — including zero feed-in — and may be integrated in the inverter, storage or charger regardless of size
FrequencyNo disconnection between 49.0 and 51.0 Hz; at least 30 min at 47.5–49.0 Hz and 51.0–51.5 Hz, at least 5 s at 51.5–52.5 Hz; units must ride through steep frequency gradients (RoCoF)
Active power vs frequencyP(f) dynamics revised as a closed control loop; storage must handle the move from rated discharge to any partial load, including power reversal
NA protectionNew protection variants; integrated up to ΣSAmax 30 kVA, central above (with defined exceptions); active island detection remains required for inverters
Bidirectional chargersTreated as storage while a V2G-capable vehicle is connected; unit and NA-protection certificates required. For DC chargers the charger certificate is enough — the vehicle counts as a battery
≤ 800 VASimplified requirements and connection for plug-in solar, small storage and combined devices
Control commandsBelow 100 kW a setpoint applies at the connection point, from 100 kW to the plant’s output

Unit certificates are issued under certification scheme type 1a of ISO/IEC 17067, and since 1 February 2025 they must be registered in the national ZEREZ database: without a ZEREZ ID, grid operators do not approve the connection.

The opportunities

Zero feed-in opens constrained grids. Where the local grid has no export capacity left, a certified PAV,E protection now allows large PV-plus-storage systems at zero or limited feed-in. Hybrid inverters and storage systems with an integrated, certified PAV,E protection save installers an extra device — a clear selling point.

Commercial systems up to 500 kW get a lighter path. Rooftop systems on warehouses, farms and apartment blocks between 135 and 500 kW can now be connected under the low-voltage rule with unit certificates, instead of the heavier medium-voltage process. That widens the market for commercial string inverters and storage.

Bidirectional charging gets a defined route. For the first time, V2G-capable chargers have a clear place in the rule. Manufacturers of DC bidirectional chargers can certify the charger alone and enter a market that German grid operators can now approve.

Early certificates win tenders. The first 2026 certificate was announced in March 2026 (a hybrid inverter certified by TÜV Rheinland, according to the manufacturer). Installers and distributors will increasingly ask for the new edition well before the 2028 deadline.

The challenges

Firmware and re-testing. Q(U) as default, the wider frequency window, RoCoF ride-through and the new P(f) dynamics — including charge/discharge reversal for storage — mean firmware changes and a new test campaign for most product families.

A moving test standard. The test procedures sit in DIN VDE V 0124-100, whose revision started in September 2025. Certifying early means testing against procedures that may still change; planning a regression test is prudent.

AC bidirectional charging is not settled. How compliance is split between an AC charger and changing vehicles is, in the grid operators’ own words, not yet finally resolved.

One firmware, many countries. The rule names three standard parameter sets but does not force German-only software. Manufacturers need clean configuration management so that German, EN 50549 and other national settings stay traceable in one firmware.

Lab capacity before the deadline. With every supplier re-certifying before early 2028, test slots will be scarce in 2027.

A practical timeline

  1. Now: gap analysis of each product family against the 2026 edition; plan firmware changes.
  2. 2026–2027: pre-tests of Q(U), P(f), frequency and RoCoF ride-through, NA protection and PAV,E protection.
  3. When DIN VDE V 0124-100 is revised: final tests, unit certificate, ZEREZ registration.
  4. By early 2028 at the latest: 2026 certificates in place for all products sold in Germany.

TSINGHU tests the grid-support functions of PV inverters, storage converters and bidirectional chargers in China and prepares the evidence an accredited certification body needs for the unit certificate — one test campaign that also covers EN 50549 and other European grid codes.

FAQ

Are inverter certificates issued under VDE-AR-N 4105:2018 still valid?

Yes, for now. They remain sufficient until 12 months after the revised DIN VDE V 0124-100 takes effect, and at the latest until 24 months after the 2026 rule — around early 2028. Plants commissioned during the transition do not need new certificates.

Does VDE-AR-N 4105 apply to a 300 kW commercial PV system?

It can. The 2026 edition covers plants with a total installed power of 135–500 kW and an agreed feed-in of up to 270 kW, even if they are connected at a higher voltage level. Above these limits a plant certificate is required.

What do bidirectional EV chargers need?

While a V2G-capable vehicle is connected, the charger counts as storage and needs a unit certificate and an NA-protection certificate registered in ZEREZ. For DC chargers the charger certificate is sufficient; for AC chargers the split between charger and vehicle is not yet settled.
